Weekly Classes

During the 90-minute class, you will hike the trails, learn special breathing and meditation techniques, and practice yoga at scenic overlooks along the way. Classes are upbeat and fun. Small class sizes (fewer than 10 students per hike) assure that you get ample access to the instructor, including help with adjustments in the postures and clarification on breathing and meditation techniques. This is a Nature-lover's dream yoga class. The weekly classes are held on Fridays at 3pm and Sundays at 2pm. We meet at 2859 Burton Dr. in Oakland. Directions are available on the Contact page. Yoga Hike Workshop

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Once each month I offer a special 4-hour workshop, which takes us deeper into the park and deeper into our connection with ourselves and with Nature. The 3-hour hike is followed by a super-sivasana - a relaxing guided mindfulnes meditation - and a delicious vegetarian lunch. The cost of the workshop is $45, and includes the yoga hike, guided meditation and lunch. Pre-registration is required for the workshop. Call 510-219-1851 to register for the next workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long is the yoga hike?

The weekly classes are 90-minutes in length. The distance travelled varies from hike to hike, but usually is about 1.5 miles.

What should I bring to a Yoga Hike?

1) Wear comfortable clothing that allows some range of motion for the yoga stretches and Qigong exercises. Layers may be appropriate, as it is cooler in the shady canyon compared to the sunny ridge areas, and your body will warm up as you hike.

2) Trail running shoes or light hiking boots will provide support, yet allow enough range of motion for the yoga postures. Tennis shoes are also fine.

3) Sunglasses and/or a hat are recommended.

4) If you feel you may want water during the hike, a water bottle holder that straps around the waist will keep your hands free for the yoga and Qigong exercises. Water will be available at the beginning and end of each hike.

5) Final resting pose (sivasana) will be done in my home studio at the end of the hike. Mats and blankets are provided. If you prefer using your own mat, please feel free to bring it.

I am a beginner to yoga; is the Yoga Hike right for me?

Beginners are welcome! You will receive instructions on how to move in and out of the yoga and Qigong postures safely. You also will be encouraged to modify postures to accommodate any physical limitations you may be working with. It is normal to feel some soreness after a new exercise routine. The soreness is the body's natural response to dealing with the new strain that you are placing on your muscles. Over time, this adaptation leads to stronger muscles and greater endurance.

What is QiGong?

Qigong is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine that incorporates breathing exercises with different body postures and movements. It is thought to balance the flow of energy through your body's energy channels, or meridians. Studies have demonstrated the health-giving effects of Qigong, e.g., regulating blood pressure, enhancing immune function, reducing risk of stroke, etc.

Where do the Yoga HIkes take place?

What Yoga Hikers are saying:

"The whole experience was so uplifting. The beautiful natural setting and the different practices that you wove into the walk were a magical blend. It was like a dance with our bodies, spirits and nature. I'll never forget seeing that white owl. Then, to top it all off, I loved the peaceful relaxation in your studio. I can't say enough except thank you again."

Jan Juengling, Yoga Hiker

"I’m a city girl who had never done yoga without a mat, much less outdoors, and I really didn't know what to expect. Following Domonick through the redwoods was so peaceful, as he dropped pearls of Eastern wisdom on us like flower petals and gently guided our meditative hike. Some butterflies joined our practice, and I got so swept away into a Snow White state of zen that I couldn’t stop smiling. And just when I thought it couldn’t get better, I looked skyward on one of our final poses, a backbend, to see a rainbow overhead. All that fresh air and good energy was pure yoga bliss, and a great hands-on lesson in how yoga can reconnect us to our bodies, our minds, and the beauty of the world around us. Domonick is a very special teacher, and this class is a very special treat!"

Suzan Revah, Yoga Hiker

"I found Domonick’s instruction to be sensitive, supportive and clear.  I particularly liked the challenge of yoga practice “in situ” because natural settings are so inspirational, and getting out of the box (of a gym or a room) adds so much to the experience.  I hike a lot anyway, so the experience of a yoga practice in  nature seems a natural expression of that joy.  It was difficult at first trying to find footing in nature, but I became more adept at this as we progressed.  The end result is that my own appreciation of nature and yoga have become enhanced."

Amy Chung, Yoga Hiker

There’s nothing like doing tree pose while looking at a stand of gorgeous redwoods rooting themselves on a lush, steep hillside. The trees, mountains, sun and fog take on new meaning in the context of Domonick’s Yoga Hikes, as we use logs for back-bending supports, tree stumps for stretching our legs, Mt. Diablo for inspiring our own mountain poses, and the trails in the Regional Redwood Forest for our monkey walks.

Domonick blends in breathing and posture flows from many different traditions, and integrates the yoga and hiking into the spectacular natural setting. During our classes, I come to experience the forest and yoga in new and unexpected ways.  Asanas which are tedious in a conventional class, become more fun under Domonick’s wise and humorous guidance. Shavasana in Domonick’s indoor studio is a lovely way to end each class; after our time outdoors, we get to journey inwards in order to integrate the rich sensory experience each class provides us."

Why Private Yoga Instruction?

Every body is unique.

The downside to group class is that some postures may be inappropriate for you, increasing the risk of injury. With private instruction, your practice is tailored to your ability.

Further, when you encountering blocks or problems in group class, you do not have time to explore the block in order to start to work through it.  Private instruction allows such time, in addition to access to individualized advice on how to address the block.

Private sessions can be done in your workplace, home or at my home in Oakland.
